Ray's second chance

Ray, Cardiac arrest survivor: I was underwater for about 3 minutes.

I'd actually got to the end of the pool and I was standing having a breather when obviously I had the cardiac arrest and just slipped down.

That's my understanding of what happened.

Tim, MICA paramedic: Ray presented to us in cardiac arrest, which means his heart had stopped beating properly.

When I arrived he was out of the pool and there was already an advanced life support team in place who were performing CPR as well as lifeguards and a GoodSAM responder.

Alex, GoodSAM responder: I work in the swimming pool industry.

I was doing some work in one of the back plant rooms.

I'd stepped outside and I heard a siren go off in my pocket.

I looked at the GoodSAM app and I saw that there was something occurring.

Ray didn't look good.

He was laying on the ground, not moving, not breathing independently.

His heart was in one of the shockable rhythms thankfully, and the defibrillator delivered 3 shocks before Ambulance Victoria arrived.

Tim: Ray's case is an excellent example of the chain of survival, so there was early recognition from lifeguards who then got him out of the pool and did an amazing job.

We had a GoodSAM responder come to assist them with CPR and application of an AED and then Ambulance Victorian and FRV arrived and were able to get his heart back into a normal rhythm.

Ray: It's the paramedics that saved me and it was the pool staff that pulled me out of the water.

The fact that Alex was there, the GoodSAM project enabled him to be alerted and I think that was fantastic.

I can't thank them enough for saving my life.

Alex: I'd encourage anyone who knows CPR to download the app.

It's very, very easy to set up.

It's very easy to get started and be there ready for what could be your next door neighbour if they need you.
