The Storm is at home against the Sharks Friday night, and the Cats and Lions are gearing up for an epic Saturday afternoon showdown, but Ambulance Victoria (AV) is taking a punt on you to deliver a best-on-ground performance by celebrating safely this long weekend.

This weekend is traditionally a busy one for Victorian paramedics and first responders, and AV Acting Executive Director Regional Operations Michael Georgiou is encouraging all footy fans to ensure ambulances are available for the sickest Victorians.

“We know many Victorians will be out and about enjoying the AFL grand final long weekend, and it’s one of the busiest weekends of the year for AV. Our ask is pretty simple – please save paramedics for life-threatening emergencies,” Mr Georgiou said.

“Whether you’re hitting the road, heading to your local, a friend’s place, or even AAMI Park and the MCG to enjoy the games, we’re asking people to please drink responsibly, stay hydrated and look out for your mates.

“It’s important to know how to access the most appropriate medical care and health advice for your needs in the right place, at the right time – when it’s not a life-threatening emergency.

“Our priority will always be responding to the sickest people first. There are many options people can access when they need timely medical care and health advice but don’t need an emergency ambulance, including a free online video call with the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department or visiting an Urgent Care Clinic.”

Here’s our winning tips for a great finals weekend:

  • Keep hydrated and drink responsibly.
  • Slip, slop, slap.
  • Look after your mates.
  • Be careful around water.
  • Plan your trips to and from where you’ll be watching the game.
  • Be safe on the roads.
