A huge congratulations are in order for the Ambulance Victoria (AV) Pipes and Drums band who were awarded fifth place in ensemble playing for their performance in this year’s Melbourne ANZAC Day march.

Marching alongside returned service men and women, community groups, other bands and individuals, the AV Pipes and Drums band paid their respects to those who have served our country.

The march ran from Swanston Street near Federation Square to the Shrine of Remembrance, with judges stationed at The National Gallery.

AV Pipes and Drums Band President and Co-Founder Graham Mummery said the group has marched in Melbourne for the past five years and were honoured to place fifth.

“Each year, the band march on ANZAC Day as a way to recognise the sacrifices made by our service men and women who have given so much for our country,” he said.

“We all take such pride in participating in the service and aim to give the best performance we can in honour of our ANZAC’s.

“All bands are judged on playing and marching, meaning you need to ensure your lines are straight and you aren’t playing out of tune.

“It’s a long march and we were blown away to receive the fifth placing of all the ensemble bands who participated. It’s certainly not something we expected but we’re honoured.”

For Graham, his love for his Scottish heritage and the history behind the music make each performance more meaningful.

For anyone interested in trying their hand at joining AV Pipes and Drums, the band always welcome new members.

“We are one of only three ambulance bands in the world so it’s an opportunity to be part of something really unique,” Graham said.

“We only have one rule when playing – have fun! If you have experience in music and would like to join a great group of people, travel and perform, we'd love to hear from you.”
