Day in the life

Andrew Watson, Group Manager

Is responsible for the welfare, development and behaviour of all the ambulance branches and paramedics in his group. ‘A lot of my tasks are about ensuring that the care we deliver to the community is of a high standard. I feel blessed to have a position such as this.'

Group Manager

Group Managers are all operational paramedics. As part of a management system, Ambulance Victoria is broken up into six regions and these regions are then further seperated into manageable groups of branches. Each group is made up of between 10-20 branches.

Group Managers are responsbile for developing staff, working closely with Station Officers and Team Managers, analysing the workload and response times of their group, are involved in the implementation of new branches or services and managing paramedic concerns or issues. A good example of this is contacting a paramedic crew after a difficult case or if the paramedic was involved in a traffic accident or was threatened by a patient.

They also work closely on a local level in dealing with politicians and media requests. Group Managers are also on call 24 hours as part of the Emergency Response Plan to provide management of mass casualty scenarios.
