Michael Ingamells, Duty Team Manager
Works in the communication centre and is responsible for monitoring ambulances to ensure communities are covered, enough resources are available, providing paramedics with meal breaks and sending the right number and right type of ambulance to an emergency. ‘We make sure the resources are in the right place - and that they get to the right jobs at the right time. It's dynamic, challenging and forever changing.'
Duty Team Managers work in the metropolitan communication centre where triple zero emergency calls are answered and ambulances are dispatched.
Duty Team Managers are all qualified paramedics. Their main role is to deal with the demand for ambulances against the number of ambulances available. They assess calls to make sure that the right type of ambulance (Advanced Life Support, MICA, Air Ambulance, etc) and right number of ambulances are sent.
They also manage hospital bypass and waiting times to unload an ambulance at a hospital. If a DTM notices ambulances are waiting too long at one hospital, they will contact the hospital, advise paramedics to use another hospital and send a field manager to the hospital to speed up the process.
An important aspect of their job is to manage meal breaks and provide the opportunity for paramedics to get rests and food breaks during their shifts.
