Schools Programs

Our new Ambulance in Schools Program is targeted to Grade Five and Six students, Emergency Deal with It, aims to help children, their teachers and parents to identify hazardous behaviours and environments, what to do in a medical emergency, and delivering basic first aid procedures including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It is hoped that through increased education of our community in these areas, Ambulance Victoria will be able to deliver improved outcomes for everyone.

The program comprises a teacher's resource kit, a school visit by a qualified paramedic and an interactive display ambulance.

Each student will receive a workbook, and a family activity pack as part of the ambulance and paramedic visit. In addition, a disposable resuscitation mask on a key ring will be provided to each participating student.

The visit comprises of three sections:

• A 1.5 hour interactive discussion and demonstration by the paramedic utilising student volunteers
• Paired-role play sessions to allow each child to practice new skills in emergency management using resuscitation manikins
• Small group guided discovery activity using the interactive ambulance

The Teachers Resource kit:

Contains a teacher’s resource book for use in the classroom and complements the ambulance and paramedic visit. The book includes lesson plans, worksheets, pictures, historical facts and activities. The kit also contains the CD Rom Emergency Deal with It, the DVD Partners for Life and a family pack.

The resources reinforce key messages about:

• Identifying environments and behaviors that are hazardous
• Identifying a medical emergency
• Calling an ambulance in a medical emergency
• Use of first aid principles including an introduction to mouth-to-mouth resuscitation

Costs for the program are $6.00 per student with a minimum charge of $180.00 and a maximum of 30 students (one full class).
