Emergency … Deal With It is targeted to grade five and six students. The program aims to help students, their teachers and their families to identify hazardous behaviours and environments, know what to do in a medical emergency, and develop skills in delivering basic first aid procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to an unconscious / non-breathing patient. Ambulance Victoria believes that through increased education of our community we will be able to build everyone’s capacity to contribute to improve patient outcomes throughout the state of Victoria.
This Ambulance In Schools program comprises teacher resources, a school based lesson by a qualified and experienced Education Officer and a take-home family activity pack for each participating student.
All Ambulance in Schools programs can be readily incorporated into the curriculum outlined in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The Education Officer’s presentation, extension activities and resources within the teacher resources provide opportunities for various strands, domains and dimensions in VELS to be explored in an interactive and useful manner.
THE EDUCATION OFFICER SCHOOL-BASED VISITAn integral part of the Ambulance In Schools program is the visit to your school by a qualified and experienced Education Officer with a variety of equipment utilised by Ambulance Victoria paramedics. This visit provides valuable hands on experience for students and their teachers.
The visit comprises two sections:
• PART 1 – exciting and interactive demonstration by the Education Officer utilising discussions, scenarios and role playing with student volunteers.
• PART 2 – individual and paired role-playing sessions to allow each child to practise responding to an emergency including developing CPR skills with the use of our unique teaching resources.
STUDENT PREPARATION – BRING A PILLOWAmbulance Victoria provides each student with unique teaching resources to take home and share with their families. This resource is called a Pillow Pal. In order for the student’s involvement in this program to be enjoyable, interactive and to achieve optimal learning we require each student to bring a standard pillow from home for the lesson.
