Research

AV promotes and participates in high quality research to improve evidence-based standards and patient care. AV is also committed to a collaborative approach to research and works closely with a range of other service providers and research institutions. All research is conducted within a rigorous research governance framework.

During 2007-2008, AV participated in 22 research studies, 17 of which are continuing.

Pre-hospital research encompasses a wide range of activities, ranging from the analysis of routinely collected data to randomised clinical trials. AV also has ongoing involvement in three quality assurance registries:

  • The Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry (VACAR), which is managed by AV and collects data on all cardiac arrest patients attended by ambulances across the state.
  • A registry coordinated by Turning Point Drug and Alchol Centre, which collects data on all non-fatal drug related cases in Melbourne.
  • The Victorian State Trauma Outcomes Registry (VSTORM) is managed by Monash University and was designed to capture information on all major trauma patients in Victoria in order to monitor the performance of the State's trauma system.
