The Media

Given the intrigue of ambulance work, the Ambulance Victoria media department has a close working relationship with the media.

We are regularly contacted by media for information regarding incidents attended by ambulance. Media also seek comment on pre-hospital medical matters and concerns, as they arise, about ambulance performance and the performance of other aspects of the health system.

Despite the volume of demands, and the impact on the provision of other services, we field media enquiries during extended office hours for a number of reasons:

  • the media plays a valuable watchdog role in keeping the community informed of social and health risks
  • we believe that we should be accountable for our performance to taxpayers
  • the media can provide a valuable vehicle for promoting the work of paramedics and educating the public on what we do
  • we regularly seek the help of the media in promoting public safety messages
  • if we do not provide media with information, it will be sought from less reliable sources

We also provide resources for various non-news television programs from time to time, primarily to improve public preparedness for medical emergencies.

Media representatives may contact Ambulance Victoria from 6am to 11pm, seven days a week, on +61 3 9840 3513. In the event of a major incident involving ambulance resources outside these hours, our media staff will be alerted of the incident and will contact the media directly.
