Paramedics treat couple hit by tree in bushfire area

9 Feb 2009

Ambulance Victoria paramedics have treated two people after a tree fell onto a car near Broadford this morning.

Advanced life support paramedics and intensive care paramedics from Kilmore and the Ambulance helicopter were called to the Broadford-Wandong Road, 5km south of Broadford at 9.30.

Intensive care paramedic Sam Gentile says they arrived to find an extensively damaged car beside the road.

‘The roof of the car had been pushed down almost to the dashboard,’ he said.

‘Passers by were providing first aid to a couple aged in their 60’s who had suffered head injuries.

‘We dressed their wounds, and fitted a neck brace, given the potential for spinal injuries.

‘Intensive care paramedics put a drip in their arms, and gave them pain relief, and fluids to help stabilise their blood pressure.

Intensive care flight paramedic Tim Styring says the 63 year-old woman was then loaded into the ambulance helicopter.

‘She had suffered a suspected fracture to the skull, deep cut to the head, and swelling and bruising above her eye,’ he said.

‘Her condition deteriorated as she was flown to the Alfred Hospital, so I put a second drip in her arm and continued treating her.

‘Given the accident happened in an area already burnt by bushfire, I’d urge everyone to take care when driving in fire affected areas.

A man aged in his 60’s was transported by road to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.’
