Man placed into induced coma after tree fall

20 Oct 2009

A man who fell 20 metres from a tree at Toolangi has been placed into an induced coma by intensive care paramedics.

Advanced life support paramedics from Yarra Junction, intensive care paramedics from Ringwood East, and an ambulance helicopter were called to Monda Road at Toolangi just before nine o’clock this morning.

Intensive care paramedic team manager Paul Howells says the 45 man suffered serious injuries in the fall.

‘We were told the man was clearing trees and fell about 20 metres from a tree, landing on the ground,’ he said.

‘He suffered serious head injuries, spinal injuries and leg injuries.

‘The ambulance helicopter hovered overhead, and the intensive care flight paramedic was winched down to help treat the man.

‘A drip was put in the man’s arm and he was given some drugs to sedate and paralyse him, putting him into an induced coma.

‘We then inserted a breathing tube deep into his airway and took over breathing for him.

‘A neck brace was also fitted to the man to reduce movement because of the spinal injuries.

‘Once his condition was stabilised he was loaded into the ambulance, and driven to a nearby clearing where the helicopter landed.

‘The intensive care flight paramedic continued treating the critically injured man during the flight to the Alfred Hospital,’ Mr Howells said.
