Lucky escape in car and train collision

29 Oct 2009

A man is lucky not to have serious injuries after his car was hit by a train at Preston this morning.

Advanced life support paramedics from Preston and a paramedic team manager were called to the St Georges Road crossing just after seven o’clock.

Paramedic Damian Erle says they arrived within seven minutes to find a car beside the train.

‘The car was extensively damaged with most of the windows shattered,’ he said.

‘The tyre had been torn off the rear wheel, and the side of the car was pushed in about 50 centimetres.

‘We thought the worst and couldn’t see the driver who then walked up to us, and said he was feeling fine.

‘The 75 year old man had some neck pain so we put a neck brace or collar on him as a precaution in case their had been some damage to his spine.

‘We put a drip in his arm in case his condition deteriorated on the way to hospital, but he was quite stable.

‘I am extremely surprised that he managed to get himself out of the car, and that he wasn’t seriously hurt. It’s quite incredible,’ Mr Erle said.

No one on the train was hurt.
