Assaulted man placed into induced coma

26 Oct 2009

A man seriously injured in an assault at Northcote was placed into an induced coma by Ambulance Victoria paramedics yesterday morning.

Advanced life support paramedics from Carlton and three intensive care paramedics were called to a unit just after nine o’clock.

Intensive care paramedic Mark Sanders says the man suffered serious injuries to the upper body in the assault.

‘The 47 year-old man was unconscious and lying on the kitchen floor when we arrived,’ he said.

‘He suffered fractures, bruising and swelling to the upper body and was having trouble breathing.

‘It was quite difficult to get him out of the unit as he had to be taken down a number of stairs.

‘A drip was put in his arm and he was drugs to reduce nausea, and fluid to help stabilise his blood pressure.

‘The man was also given drugs to increase his slow heart rate.

‘The man was then sedated and paralysed by intensive care paramedics, allowing us to put him into an induced coma.

‘We inserted a breathing tube deep into his airway and took over breathing for him.

‘He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition,’ Mr Sanders said.
