Windy weather keeps paramedics busy

15:30   5 Feb 2012

Several people were injured in wind related accidents across Melbourne today.

A 19 year-old man was struck when a tree branch fell on him in Fitzroy Gardens just before one o’clock.

Advanced life support paramedic Stuart North said the man was struck in the head and arm.

‘We think the man briefly lost consciousness after he was hit and he has a bump on the head,’ Mr North said.

‘As a precaution we put a neck brace on him and managed his spine in case he suffered spinal injuries in the accident.

‘He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

‘There have been a few accidents where people have been hurt by falling tree branches and objects blown in the wind so people should be mindful of that and the potential tree branches could come down across roads,’ Mr North said.

Paramedics were also called to:

• A 50 year-old man who was lucky to escape injury when a tree crashed onto the road at the intersection of Pound and Shrive Roads in Hampton Park. The man’s car was crushed by a tree branch which pushed the roof in;

• A woman and her two sons, aged nine-months and five-years who were exposed to smoke from a grass fire in Frankston. A man from a neighbouring house who came to help them was also assessed by paramedics. No-one was treated;

• A 46 year-old man who was stung by a bee while he was trying to move a fallen tree from the road at the intersection of Coolart & Eromosa Roads in Somerville;

• A man who suffered minor injuries when he was struck by some fencing which blew onto a bike path at Spotswood.
