76 year-old man injures spine in Knoxfield fall

18:45   5 Feb 2012

A man has a serious spinal injury after falling from a tree at Knoxfield this afternoon.

The 76 year-old man was hurt when he fell up to four metres just after two o’clock.

Intensive care paramedics and advanced life support paramedics arrived to find the man lying on his back in the backyard of his home.

Intensive care paramedic Ashley Jackson said the man was unable to move.

‘The man was on a ladder pruning branches on a tree when he slipped and fell, landing on his back,’ Mr Jackson said.

‘Unfortunately he didn’t have any safety equipment.

‘He suffered a serious spinal injury when he landed on a branch on the ground which he had already pruned.

‘The man didn’t have any feeling below his waist and also hit his head in the fall.

‘We put a neck brace on him and his neck and spine were immobilised by strapping him to the ambulance stretcher to reduce any further damage to his spine.

‘He was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition,’ Mr Jackson said.

Yesterday a 76 year-old man suffered spinal injuries when he fell three metres onto concrete when a pergola roof gave way at Sunshine North.
