A woman was given a blood transfusion using blood carried on the air ambulance helicopter after a crash near Wallan yesterday.
Paramedics from Kilmore, a single responder intensive care paramedic and an ambulance helicopter were called to the crash on Romsey Road at Darraweit Guim just after 8.30am.
Kilmore advanced life support paramedic Ken Lazarus said a car ran off the road and crashed into a large boulder.
‘There was extensive damage to the driver’s side of the car with the driver’s door pushed in,’ Mr Lazarus said.
‘The force of the impact actually pushed the steering wheel to the centre of the car and the 64 year-old woman who was driving was trapped by her foot.
‘An off-duty paramedic stopped to help before we arrived.
‘We treated the woman throughout the 90-minute rescue operation although it was quite difficult as there was limited space in the car.
‘The woman had a low blood pressure and probably had internal injuries. She also suffered a suspected fractured pelvis and leg.
‘We gave the woman some pain relief drugs and fluid through a drip to help boost her blood pressure.
‘Once the woman was freed she was moved to the ambulance helicopter.
‘She was given a blood transfusion by the intensive care flight paramedic, and was flown to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition,’ Mr Lazarus said. ENDS
