Man flown to hospital after fall from horse

13:45   30 Jan 2012

Paramedics treated a man for serious injuries after he fell from a horse at Balnarring on Thursday 26 January.

Advanced life support paramedics from Hastings and intensive care paramedics were called to the scene just after 5pm.

Paramedic Lisa Pliksh said that when they arrived they were told that the 34-year-old man had been riding at a considerable speed when he fell.

‘Witnesses told us that he landed head-first on the ground and that the horse then rolled on top of him.

‘It’s believed that he was unconscious for about five minutes and that when he came-to he was confused about what had happened.

‘As we assessed him, he told us that was unable to remember the fall.

‘Given the potential for him to have suffered a spinal injury, a neck brace was fitted and he was moved on a spineboard that’s designed to keep the body as still and straight as possible.

‘He was also given pain relief to make him more comfortable.

‘We had serious concerns for his pelvis as he told us that he had severe, sharp pain through his right hip.

‘Pelvic injuries have the potential for internal bleeding so we arranged for an air ambulance helicopter to transport him.

‘Once he was stabilised, he was flown to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition,’ Ms Pliksh said.
