A 13 year-old boy was critically injured in a backyard fire in Mt Eliza this afternoon.
Advanced life support paramedics from Mornington, a single responder intensive care paramedic and an ambulance helicopter were called just after 1.30pm.
Intensive care flight paramedic Shaun Whitmore said the boy suffered serious burns in the incident.
‘The boy was near a fire in the backyard which flared up, causing some burns to his chest, arms and face,’ Mr Whitmore said.
‘The teenager ended up with some burns to his airway which can swell and restrict the airway and prevent you breathing efficiently.
‘He was given some pain relief drugs through a spray up his nose and then intravenously and then he was put into a coma and a breathing tube was inserted to look after his airway.
‘The burns injuries were also covered with a special gel soaked dressing which helps reduce the pain of the burns.
‘The boy was then moved to the ambulance helicopter and flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition,’ Mr Whitmore said.
