A mountain bike rider is in a serious condition after an accident at Mt Buller this afternoon.
The 16 year-old was injured in an accident on the mountain just before four o’clock.
Intensive care flight paramedic Paul Coghlan said the rider was found lying on the ground near a tree.
‘He was apparently missing for a few minutes and friends found him unconscious beside his bike next to a tree,’ Mr Coghlan said.
‘The teenager was quite confused and agitated which is a sign that he was suffering serious head injuries.
‘The advanced life support paramedics managed his pain and met up with the helicopter.
‘Due to the head injuries we gave him some drugs to sedate and paralyse him and put a breathing tube into his airway.
‘It allowed us to manage his breathing and make sure he is getting enough oxygen.
‘The teenager was then flown by ambulance helicopter to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.
‘Thankfully he was wearing a helmet or the injuries may have been much more severe,’ Mr Coghlan said.
