Man walks away from crushed car

11:50   20 Jan 2012

Paramedics dispatched to this morning’s Burnley Tunnel crash said they feared the worst when told there was a crash involving two trucks and a car.

Advanced life support and intensive care paramedics were called to the scene just after 9.30am.

Single responder intensive care paramedic Bill Briggs said that when he arrived he saw a small four-wheel-drive sandwiched between the back of one truck and the front of another.

‘The vehicle in the middle was completely written off. The rear wheels had been pushed so far in that they were sitting under the driver’s seat. There was also significant damage to the front of the car.

‘How the driver escaped with no major injuries is really quite amazing. He was actually quite surprised that he was all in one piece. He was looking at his vehicle and couldn’t understand how he escaped without more serious injuries.

‘The driver, believed to be aged in his 30s, told us that he was feeling sore with some aches and pains around the knees where they would’ve impacted the dash.

‘I would have to say that he is one of the luckiest people that I have attended. Given the impact force, it’s absolutely staggering that he hasn’t sustained serious injuries.

Paramedics assessed the two truck drivers who were shaken but not injured.
