Snake in the city

A snake is on the loose in the city after biting a cleaner on the hand outside (removed) store.

The man, 29, was loading rubbish in a laneway between (removed) and (removed) streets about 9.30am when he was bitten by a dark-coloured snake.

He said that the reptile leapt up and bit him on the finger, then hung on for a few seconds.

"There were four very obvious puncture wounds to his right hand, to his finger specifically," paramedic Heidi Taylor said.

"I've been a paramedic for eight years. I've never been to a snake bite wound and I'd say it's incredibly rare in the city."

Workers rushed to the man's aid immediately, wrapping his hand in a bandage. When paramedics arrived, they gave him oxygen and put him on a drip before taking him to St Vincent's Hospital.

Laneways around (removed) were cordoned off and a snake catcher was called in to find the snake, believed to be about 20cm long.

An ambulance spokesman said paramedics were unsure what type of snake it was.
