Car into shop at Strathmore

00:00   7 Jan 2010

An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with a suspected broken chest bone, after crashing into the front of a shop this morning.

Advanced life support and intensive care paramedics were called to the scene in Mascoma Street by witnesses at 9:20am.

Paramedic Rachel Wilkins says the woman was still sitting in her car, quite shaken by the accident.

‘We did our best to calm her before giving her oxygen and assessing her injuries,’ she said.

‘She told us there was a sharp pain spreading to her ribs, leading us to believe she may have cracked her sternum.’

‘Given the potential for her to also have damaged her spine, we fitted her with a neck brace.’

‘We then used a special boomerang shaped support, to safely move her from the driver’s seat.’

‘She was then strapped to a spine board, to keep her still and prevent any potential damage her back, before being transferred to a waiting ambulance.’

‘We used an ECG monitor to check her heart.

‘She was given pain relief and fluids through a drip to stabilise her.’ Ms Wilkins said.
